A HOUSE DIVIDED

A House Divided is a romantic drama about an African American woman married to a Caucasian police officer, who ends up responsible for the shooting of a young African American male.

Why this story, and why now?

In July of 2016 I wrote this short film after watching video footage of the shooting of Philando Castille. His shooting grieved me because of the fact that viral video allowed America to see what happened inside of the car that day. I felt a welling up of emotions of fear, sadness, and anger at the state of racial injustice in our country. I started writing as a way to ask myself how to address my relationship to the police as a young black woman. I decided to put myself in a character and ask the question, how would I handle this? How would I face the unthinkable if I had already made a commitment to love and respect this man?

This film is in no way intended to be a bashing of the police or an apology for them. It is at its core a love story that I hope deeply touches people, and allows us to ask questions for ourselves of where do we allow ourselves to become blind, unforgiving, or even desensitized to the topic of race. I hope it is a blessing.
